5 College Ranking Categories We Would Like to See

by Robyn Tellefsen
A college's acceptance and graduation rates may be worth knowing, but there are some other college ranking categories we'd really like to see. You probably won't make your college decision based on these rankings, but they'd sure be fun to know, wouldn't they?

Best mate-finding potential
Many schools are touted for their top-notch BS and MBA programs, but what about those that offer the coveted MRS degree? Grove City College, an evangelical Christian school, is one that might make the list of best colleges to meet your mate. Since the majority of students at the Grove City, PA, school share the same faith and values, finding a marriage partner by senior year is a common occurrence.

Coolest celeb alumni
Most college alumni will tell you it's the friendships they formed in school that made their college experience. Wouldn't it be even cooler if your college BFFs -- or even you -- took a turn for the famous? The University of Southern California (USC) would certainly be one for the all-time coolest celeb alumni list. The Los Angeles school graduated filmmaker George Lucas, astronaut Neil Armstrong, WNBA player Lisa Leslie, and actress Kyra Sedgwick, among others.

Best bathrooms
Everybody knows there are good and bad bathrooms on campus, and don't pretend like it doesn't matter. One school has already garnered national recognition for its hygiene facilities: Smith College (Northampton, MA) won fifth place in Cintas' 2008 America's Best Restroom awards. The water-themed restrooms at Smith College Museum of Art feature hand-painted tiles and etched glass panels depicting sea creatures and plant life.

Most offbeat electives
When students enroll in college, they know they're in for the usual math, language, and history courses. How about schools that offer electives most people have never even heard of? At Unity College, an environmental school in Unity, Maine, offbeat electives are the order of the day. Students can choose from courses such as sea kayaking; applied fish physiology; dendrology (the study of woody plants); and chainsaw safety, maintenance, and use.

Strangest campus tradition
Plenty of schools are famous for students streaking across campus and supposed supernatural occurrences when a virgin graduates. But how many colleges can boast traditions involving smashed produce? At the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), an annual watermelon drop marks the end of the school year. A student-elected "watermelon queen" drops a watermelon seven stories in an attempt to break splat records. (The best official record for the splat was set in 1974: 167 feet, 4 inches.)

I cant decide what college to go to! I change my mind all the time about what I'd like to do. I want to go to school in California but a lot of the schools are technical. What if I end up deciding I want to be a beauty technician or something? I don't think I can afford to change colleges every.time I change my mind.
