21 Things That Everyone Forgets to Bring to College

by Robyn Tellefsen
Extra-long sheets? Check. Flash drive? Check. Sense of humor? Whoops, left that one in the car.

Don't be caught unprepared. Print this list of things that everyone forgets to

bring to college

 .

1. Batteries
Dad won't be around to bail you out when your remote control runs out of juice. Get the AA and AAA hookup before you leave.

2. Compact umbrella
Rain is a fact of life. Plan for it.

3. Good habits
If you already eat well and exercise, don't become a lump when you get to school. If your good habits are lacking, get in gear now.

4. Quarters
Think of it this way -- you don't want to have to hunt for change before you can wash your clothes.

5. Flashlight
You'll need one if the power goes out. Or maybe you just want to do hand shadow puppets on your dorm room wall to amuse (or frighten) your roommate.

6. Self-confidence
You're surrounded by smarties, so you'll need a strong sense of self to succeed in college.

7. Air freshener
Not hard to figure out why you'd need this one in the dorms.

8. First aid kit
You don't need to run to the health center every time you get a boo-boo. Fix it up as good as mom does with your brought-from-home supplies.

9. Humility
Be willing to learn from the people around you. They might know a thing or two.

10. Toolkit
Who else is going to fix your stuff when it breaks? Bring a Phillips head and a pair of pliers and you'll be the most popular person in the dorms.

11. Power strips, surge protectors, adaptors, extension cords
Dorm rooms never have enough outlets for all your electronic gear, so bring the gadgets you'll need to hook yourself up.

12. Ability to let go of a high school flame
Don't let your significant other become a security blanket and keep you from fully exploring your new college digs.

13. Lock box
Privacy in the dorms is an oxymoron. If you want to keep your stuff safe, lock it up.

14. Backpack
Do you really want to go back to your dorm room to grab books in between each class?

15. Grace for your roommate
It's her first time at college, too. Cut her some slack.

16. Duct tape
Problem: cracked taillight, ripped jeans, broken book. Solution for all of the above: duct tape.

17. Extra-long TV cable
Bring it on the off chance that the cable hookup in your dorm room is nowhere near where you actually want to put your TV.

18. Love of learning
It's why you're going to college in the first place, right?

19. Ear plugs
Unless you can sleep to a symphony of snores and study to the sound of a hundred blaring stereos, ear plugs are essential.

20. Vitamins
If the dining hall fare is subpar, supplement with a multivitamin. Think of it as cheap health insurance.

21. Support system
You're not on this journey alone. Your family and friends are still just a phone call away.
