The Professional Pilot Program at Utah State University is designed to prepare pilots for careers in the aviation industry. Upon graduating from the program, students will have earned a Bachelors degree in Aviation Technology - Professional Pilot as well as the following flight ratings:
• Private Pilot Certificate
• Instrument Rating
• Commercial Certificate
• Multi Engine Rating
• Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
• Certified Flight Instrument Instructor Rating (CFII)
Upon graduation, many students build time by flight instructing, flying small cargo lines and scenic tours, or transporting fire fighters and equipment.
The 4-year program is divided into two parts: Pre-Professional and Professional Programs. The first two years are dedicated to fulfilling pre-professional requirements in areas of general education (such as Math and English) as well as aviation courses in aircraft systems and aerodynamics. In addition, students will complete courses required to obtain their Private Pilot.
After acceptance into the Professional Program, students will complete upper-division coursework in Airline Operations, Human Factors in Aviation, Aviation Law, Aviation Meteorology, and other remaining general education courses.
Utah State University is also pleased to offer its professional students a year long course on the Regional Jet which includes hands on experience in our own RJ simulator. Upon advancement into the professional course of study, students may choose to seek a minor in various fields, including Management. All remaining flight certificates and courses will be completed while in the Professional Program before graduation.
The Professional Pilot Program is set in Utah's beautiful Cache Valley, offering diverse terrain with all types of weather. Students will encounter mountain and high altitude flying, experience controlled and uncontrolled airspace, and enjoy beautiful scenery as you learn the techniques you need to succeed. All flight training is completed from Utah State University's airport facility located at the Logan/Cache airport.
Medical Certificates:
In accordance with the Code of Federal Regulation Title 14, Part 61.3, All Professional Pilot students are required to obtain an FAA Medical Certificate. There are three classes of medicals which can be obtained:
• First Class,
• Second Class,
• and Third Class.
Financial Aid:
One of the most challenging aspects of learning to fly is finding the means to finance your flight training. It's easy to understand why new students get discouraged when considering the cost of the flight training portion of the Professional Pilot program. The flight training costs approximately $35,000 in addition to tuition. This causes many to give up their dream of flying even before they start, but this does not have to be the case. Federal Financial Aid can make your dreams of flight become a reality.
During the freshman and sophomore years, students in the Aviation Technology-Maintenance Management major will complete most of the courses required for the FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) licenses. Students will also take advanced turbine engines, aviation law, and composites structures. Computer literacy, management, and communications courses are incorporated into the program to provide essential business skills. Industry internships are available and encouraged in the junior and senior years.
This major prepares students for entry-level positions in management and maintenance programs within the airline industry, corporate aviation, and general aviation. The FAA-approved airframe and powerplant (A&P) curricula form the basis for this degree, and most positions will require the A&P licenses. Employment opportunities include positions with major airlines as maintenance personnel, maintenance supervisors, fixed-base operators, maintenance directors, repair station managers, FAA inspectors, aircraft/powerplant, and component manufacturers, as well as aerospace manufacturers. These industries are expanding at a rapid rate with excellent employment opportunities. This is forecasted to continue well into the twenty-first century.
