Houghton Academy is a coeducational, Christian,
college preparatory school established in 1883.
The Academy is a traditional boarding school where motivated and capable students come to prepare for college. Over ninety percent of Academy graduates attend a four-year university immediately after graduation. The Academy’s location and size fosters a strong, supportive school community. Independent and mature students are encouraged to apply. Houghton Academy offers a positive environment where academic success is held in high regard. The small town in which the school is located offers a safe and secure environment for secondary students to live and study. Because of the international boarding demographic at Houghton Academy, both the American and the international students have a unique opportunity to share and unite their cultures through communication in class time, after-school activities, and dorm life, gaining a truly global education. In addition to a strong academic program, the school offers a considerable array of athletic, artistic, musical, literary, and performing-arts extra-curricular activities.
Overview & Welcome
Houghton Academy offers a traditional boarding school environment in the context of a Christian philosophy of education. The distinguishing feature of a Christian philosophy of education is that the Academy employs Christian faculty and staff who are charged to serve as Christian role models while integrating the truth of Scripture into classes and activities.
With that as our philosophical orientation, we are happy to invite students from all religious or non-religious backgrounds to join us. In fact, we have now or recently enrolled students from all the major world religions who benefit from the very positive environment we offer, and who feel quite at home in our school.
For over a century, we have established an excellent track record of placing Academy graduates into colleges. Graduates from Houghton Academy are well-prepared for college and for life, possessing a solid foundation of academic knowledge as well as the moral framework with which to apply their knowledge. We offer a three-fold educational emphasis on head, heart and hands. We seek to supply core knowledge, allow knowledge to be informed by faith, and then encourage students to put their knowledge and faith into action.
Please visit us if you are able. We welcome visitors all year, but especially encourage prospective students to spend a day with us attending classes. A visit is the best way to be sure that you know what you are getting into. |

School life at Houghton Academy does not begin and end in the classroom. Dorm life is an important component of a boarding student's experience. Activities extend well beyond the classroom and can be classified as both structured and unstructured.
One of the more popular structured activities is interscholastic athletics. Joining a sport's team is not only a lot of fun, but it allows students to practice some of their life-lessons in the crucible of competition. Other students enjoy music or drama; many of the opportunities in these areas are also structured, falling under the purview of the Music Department. Our Ski Club is very popular, and makes weekly visits to nearby Holiday Valley during the winter months (weather permitting).
Unstructured activities include many opportunities in the outdoors, such as cross-country skiing, hiking, biking, or hunting. The village of Houghton also offers many avenues to volunteer in service to others; through the years, both the nursing home and the church have engaged altruistically-minded students. Academy supports but does not always organize these efforts.

The purpose of Houghton Academy is to provide Christ-centered education in a Christian environment. For this reason the school must maintain a high standard of Christian living. Coming from varied backgrounds, students have differences of opinion about accepted conduct, but the life standards upheld by Houghton Academy is widely endorsed in various cultures around the world. We want our students to be healthy—emotionally, physically and spiritually. |

Our considerable experience suggests that the formula for great education is relatively simple. We supply capable, enthusiastic and professional teachers and we seek capable, motivated students who are making positive life choices. When great students encounter great teachers in a safe and positive environment, awesome education is the result!
