Paralegal Course of Study
Students learn the basics of American law. This field of study has a rich history rooted in English common law, and has since been expanded and re-defined by court cases, legislation, and administrative proceedings. Students are prepared to grasp legal concepts and engage in legal analysis. These skills are especially helpful for paralegals interested in critical, law-defining cases such as appeals and other high court decisions. Paralegals are prepared to help draft legal documents and assist attorneys with filing and organizing legal materials with the courts. The American Bar Association (ABA) approves the Fremont College Paralegal Studies degree program, and reviews its compliance each year.
The program follows a sequence that builds on core fundamentals taken early in the program. For example, students are introduced to the legal industry, the court system, and the synthesis of lawyers and paralegals in the workplace. Ethics, client privacy guidelines, and legal lawyer and paralegal practices are taught as integral components of the program. Ethics is the sole focus of one course, and its fundamentals are iterated throughout the program.
Course work in Civil and Criminal procedure and practice, and Legal Research courses follow Ethics, rounding out the fundamental classes for the paralegal education program. Advanced-standing students prepare for legal specialty areas in Family Law, Property & Probate, Torts, Contracts -- and, in corporate law through a course in Business Organizations.
Graduation and Career Options
The job duties and functions of a paralegal vary from law firm to law firm, and from student to student. Paralegals work under the direct supervision of an attorney; however, they are able to lighten attorney case loads by taking on some of the legal work themselves. Legal research and writing are two of the most common tasks a paralegal with a degree will perform. Paralegals are frequently responsible for case management and organization; court filing or trial exhibit preparation; and drafting mortgage documents, divorce papers, and many other types of legal documents. Careers available for paralegals are growing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is one of the fastest-growing careers of the decade.
Preparing for a Paralegal Career
Fremont College offers general education classes as part of the Paralegal Studies Degree; this component of the paralegal education helps students to prepare for a law-oriented career. Very strong communication, organization, and English writing and grammar skills are necessary for success in the legal field. Fremont helps students gain proficiency in these general education areas and aids students in becoming successful researchers, technologists and collaborators in the workplace.
Fremont's English course helps Paralegal Studies students to make immediate contributions in their new law careers. Students gain proficiency in computer applications, business theory and application, finance, math, and critical thinking. Upon program completion, students will be prepared to seek Paralegal careers in California including Los Angeles, Orange County, Cerritos, Irvine, Huntington Beach, Long Beach, and other locations.

Legal Practice Technology and the Digital Courthouse
Essential components of the paralegal education
The modernization of the American office saves time, money, and precious space. However, as businesses from law to medicine to accounting move from "paper offices" to "paperless offices," professionals new to these fields must begin their careers with the understanding of how to use and apply the latest technology in order to remain competitive in the job market.
In response to the rapidly changing demands of legal practice, Fremont College has developed a Legal Practice Technology course at its Cerritos, California campus, designed for the ABA approved Paralegal Studies education track. The course prepares paralegal students for the wired – or, wireless – law firm and court room. Beginning with a solid foundation in legal ethics, this course introduces paralegal studies students to the varying uses of technology in law, evidence, project management and how the paralegal career has evolved in step with new office and litigation support technologies.
Technology knowledge is a great asset in the legal field. From electronic court document filing systems to courtroom testimonies via videoconferencing and multimedia platforms, lawyers and paralegals have more tools to make their case and promote efficiency than ever before. No longer should paralegals sift through yellowed newspapers and ancient microfiche slides – they can scan and index digital information and search and retrieve documents in electronic databases. Technology has also enabled paralegals to file court briefs, testimony and other filings electronically, and present electronic evidence in a court of law. The Legal Practice Technologies course focuses on the practical use of electronic databases, electronic filing, and the many uses of technology in the paralegal field including the theory behind the ethical handling and procurement of a client's digital information.
Legal ethics and technology
Paralegal students begin the course by learning about the role of ethics in using legal technology and handling confidential digital information. They will understand how legal ethics interact with computer technology, and how technological abuses constitute ethical breaches. Students will learn to identify the advantages and disadvantages of technology, and will come to understand what constitutes attorney-client privilege and the boundaries of legal confidentiality.
The next portion of this course teaches students how to use technology in the legal field, during investigations, in managing evidence and in exchanging electronic media between parties to a lawsuit and with the court. Paralegals also learn how to identify critical documents, how to link legal language with coding, and how to scrub meta-data. Instruction in word processing, spreadsheet and PDF (portable document format) creation, and database use and management are included. From there, students move onto electronic discovery practices, including the federal rules of civil procedure, informing clients on how to preserve digital information, and how to produce and retrieve electronic information using the right resources.
Paralegal course work will include:
* Written assignments covering class concepts
* Software training, tutorials, and experience
* Group work and group presentations
* A legal database development project
Software and task automation for the paralegal
Timekeeping and billing software is used by most paralegals. Most law firms, attorneys and paralegals record their work activities by a system consisting of hourly increments. The Legal Practice Technology course teaches paralegal students how to record timekeeping and billing, and provides instruction on the docket cycle and docket software to quickly determine court deadlines, timelines, and court requirements in most jurisdictions. Technological applications and advances in this area of legal practice are instilled in students.
Next in the course, paralegal studies students will learn how to use proprietary software packages specific to the legal industry. Examples of this software will include case management software, trial presentation and litigation support software packages. These packages streamline paralegal job duties, allowing career paralegals to efficiently assume legal work loads and provide a law firm with contributions from the start. The course supplements student's personal knowledge of the Internet and e-mail and demonstrate how to scrub confidential data from documents and attachments. Cyber-ethics, preservation of digital evidence, and gathering sources electronically are all topics of discussion. This portion of the course concludes with a discussion of federal, state, and local court compliance rules.
Advanced paralegal tech concepts
Some of the greatest advances in legal technologies are computer-assisted legal research and automated court document filing and presentation. The final portions of the Legal Practice Technology course will focus on these vital electronic entities and students will research cases, statutes, and other electronic legal authorities. Students will learn how to use fee-based legal research services, and understand where to find public and government records that can assist them in legal brief and trial preparation. They will also learn how to perform e-filings of briefs and other essential legal papers, and will learn how technology can be used to present evidence and testimony in the court room. Specialized, proprietary legal software packages and vendors are discussed as well. These sections of the course will be incorporated with legal ethics concepts.
Upon completion of the Legal Practice Technology course, budding paralegals will have a wealth of technological skills at their disposal, which will foster the transition into modern paralegal careers.
In the Legal Practice Technology class at Fremont College, Paralegal Studies students will learn:
* The ethical handling of electronic legal information and resources
* Legal information gathering and handling best practices
* Legal database creation and information retrieval
* The use of technology to itemize and bill hours and to access dockets
* Using e-mail communications to present and retrieve evidence
* The use of e-databases to retrieve information, file court papers, and collect data
* How to use technology to present evidence in the courtroom
