Fashion Design and Merchandising
The Bachelor degree program in Fashion Design and Merchandising offers advanced courses in pattern drafting, computer-aided design, couture clothing construction, and fashion marketing and trend analysis. Students will create original patterns and garments in response to researched market trends, manufacturing specifications, estimated production costs, and creative conceptualization; and will have the opportunity to explore specialized topics in fashion that will prepare them for a variety of professional industry careers.
Bachelor Level Core Competencies (Application, Analysis, Synthesis)
- Research and analyze the profession, merchandising, principles, history, styles, terminology, organizations, retailers, markets, and important designers in fashion.
- Prescribe types of fabric, pattern designs, and situations in which garments will be worn.
- Analyze fashion trends, consumer needs, and preferences that are used to forecast, plan, develop, and promote clothing lines.
- Experiment with lines, colors, patterns, textures, functions, and styles in the design and creation of original fashion designs.

Graphic Design
The Bachelor degree program in Graphic Design program allows students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the commercial art, graphic design, and multimedia industries. Students will examine corporate design strategies, promotional design tactics, advertising principles, and graphic design theories that can be used to enhance the development of professional design skills. Web design, multimedia, page layout, typography, advertising, digital video, digital photography, and business solutions and techniques are explored through the completion of selected visual communication projects.
Bachelor Level Core Competencies (Application, Analysis, Synthesis)
- Examine historic and cultural art forms as a means for improving one’s own work and developing innovative solutions for graphic design projects.
- Analyze both the creative and practical aspects of design solutions during the completion of graphic design and multimedia projects and during classroom critiques.
- Design Web pages and sites using both design software and hand coding.
- Utilize various features of Web design, including the use of graphics, video, audio, and animation; tables, frames, forms, and hyperlinks; selected HTML, javascript, and XML tags and scripts; and the use of cascading style sheets.
- Examine advanced topics in Web design during the completion of individual and group assignments, including browser targeting, integrating databases and digital media, and improving Web site performance.
- Demonstrate advanced page layout principles and techniques during the completion of individual and group projects; develop creative solutions for project needs across various media (e.g. print, Web, multimedia).
- Create well-crafted page layouts, focusing on the processes and technical design choices necessary to produce consistent and professional proofs and multiples; examine advanced printing, software, and hardware issues related to typical graphic design projects.
- Experiment with scanning, page layout, digital imaging, and computer illustration techniques to create more effective designs in response to project needs.
- Create interactive, vector-based animation for the Web and other media utilizing audio, video, graphic, and textual content; prepare multimedia content for use on various computer platforms and in selected user interfaces.
- Experiment with drawing techniques and digital rendering, and manipulate scanned images using computer software.

- Create professional quality digital video for distribution in various formats (e.g. DV, QuickTime, AVI, MPEG, WMA, etc.) utilizing post-production software and computer hardware.
- Use sound capture, video production, and editing equipment; and discuss the use of sound and video capture, production, and editing used in visual communication projects.
- Examine market research, consumer behavior, and merchandising principles involved in advertising projects, and design graphical materials in response to product and consumer needs.
- Develop project management skills through the creation of business plans that analyze client needs, research market needs, estimate project costs, and meet project timelines.
- Apply business principles, legal and ethical issues, and professional requirements used in visual communication that satisfy project needs.
- Complete a visual communication internship while practicing professional skills and techniques that are used in the industry.

Interior Design
The Bachelor degree program in Interior Design explores theoretical principles, regulatory requirements, and professional interior design strategies, focusing on the development of practical skills necessary for future employment. Students will examine space planning, resources and materials, lighting systems, acoustical principles, ergonomics and universal accessibility, contractual and business issues, building codes, presentation techniques, and aesthetic principles through the completion of residential and commercial projects.

- Demonstrate knowledge of professional organizations in interior design, including certification, licensing, and/or registration requirements.
- Examine the history of design, architecture, furniture, and interiors, with a focus on aesthetic, economic, social, psychological, religious, and political influences on the design of interiors and architecture.
- Apply principles and elements of design from throughout history to the design of interior spaces.
- Develop sketching and perspective drawing skills to accurately represent perspective, volume, scale, and space and creatively showcase design ideas.
- Analyze and create professional presentations using three-dimensional models, perspective drawings, and other visuals.

The Fashion Design and Merchandising program prepares students for entry-level positions in the fashion design, retail, and merchandising industries. Draping, pattern drafting, computer design, and construction using industry-standard equipment are used to develop new concepts and to refine students’ individual skills and talents. Our curriculum develops competent multitasking skills, integrating conceptual and creative abilities with technical and sound business practices that prepare our students for successful professional careers in the fashion industry.

Digital imaging, computer illustration, desktop publishing, prepress, and prepress skills are used to refine concepts and develop students’ individual skills and talents. Graphic design and portfolio classes are designed to prepare students for their internships and professional careers.

- Develop representational and non-representational drawing ability through an examination of various drawing tools and techniques.
- Discuss principles of composition and elements of two- and three-dimensional design, including balance, rhythm, color, line, texture, and light, and describe their interrelation and effects upon the viewer.
- Examine linear perspective and anatomy in relation to the drawing process, and utilize various illustrative techniques to solve commercial design problems.
- Explore the history, terminology, specifications, mechanics, and aesthetic characteristics of type as used in design.

Students will develop design concepts for interior spaces, and transform these concepts into practical, functional, and innovative environments that meet client needs. Architectural drafting, space planning, and computer-aided design are used to develop new concepts and to refine students’ individual skills and talents. Building systems, regulations, and current business practices are taught to prepare students for their internships and professional careers in interior design.

- Identify and describe the principles and elements of interior design, including the profession, history, styles, organizations, and important designers in the field.
- Discuss regulations, codes, ethics, and professional standards in interior design, including licensure and registration.

- Explore compositional principles, spatial relationships, and aesthetic concerns in interior design and drafting.
