Situated in the heart of Canada's Capital, Ashbury College engages students in a dynamic learning environment and inspires them to become intellectually vibrant, compassionate and responsible citizens.
Since 1891, Ashbury has been fostering the academic, artistic and athletic development of our students while nurturing their spiritual growth. Ashbury's Junior School for boys welcomes day students from Grades 4 to 8. The Senior School, Grades 9 to 12, is co-educational, with 100 students boarding on campus. Twenty percent of Ashbury's student population is international, and represents 30 countries.
With small classes, a dedicated faculty and well-structured athletic and co-curricular activities, Ashbury College helps each student reach his or her potential in a supportive learning environment.
The five values at the core of the school - academic excellence, community, ethical and spiritual development, personal growth, and international understanding - infuse our curriculum, our relationships and our sense of self. Ashburians are well-rounded, hard-working students who gain the skills, knowledge and passion to succeed in life.
We invite you to visit the campus, where you can experience the character, commitment and achievement of our students. |

The Junior School distinguishes itself by providing an academic environment that is very active and hands-on to stimulate and challenge the students as individuals. It is the aim of the Junior School to enable every boy to develop in the areas of academics, athletics, arts, co-curriculars, community and leadership skills. In achieving these aims, the Junior School provides clear standards and guidelines in work, sport, dress and behavior.
High quality and committed staff play an important role in this process by specializing in areas of content knowledge and continually advancing their teaching skills. The teachers expect the boys to do their best in work by actively encouraging excellence and effort in all activities and by developing relationships based on mutual politeness and respect.
Junior School curriculum is delivered in a learning environment that is both innovative and engaging. Hands-on experiences occur daily in arts and music facilities, large gym spaces, outdoors and in science or computer laboratories. Stimulating class discussions, group projects and off-site field trips are just some of the ways that students are challenged.
Engaging students in a broad range of endeavours gives families a clear value from their educational experience in the Junior School. Academic excellence is awarded with Scholar Roll standing and effort is monitored through the Honour Board process. Inter-House competitions serve to further unite students in academics, co-curricular, community and personal growth.
Philosophy of Education
The liberal education provided by the Ashbury College Senior School teaches students to think, speak and write clearly, critically and creatively. It leads them to explore the core subjects that comprise our human heritage and are the hallmarks of an educated person. It develops a healthy body and illuminates the spirit by inspiring students to look beyond themselves towards the greater good.
Teaching at the College is characterized by meaningful and respectful relationships between faculty and students, the teachers’ profound engagement with their disciplines, and a diverse range of pedagogical approaches.
Ashbury graduates enter university with the knowledge, skills, integrity and compassion born of careful scholarship, richly rewarding faculty contacts, physical activity and spiritual reflection.
Mission
The Academic Team is dedicated to supporting students and faculty in maintaining the highest standard of academic excellence. This is provided through innovative attitudes, individualized attention, long-term planning, and coordinated efforts.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma
The IB Diploma is a comprehensive, two-year university preparatory curriculum with approximately 500 000 students in 2000 schools in 124 countries. It continues to grow at a rate of 14% a year and its excellent preparation for post-secondary study is recognized by universities world-wide. This recognition includes attractive admission packages, scholarships and advanced course placement. Ashbury College has been an IB World School since January 1975, sharing the core values of internationalism and lifelong learning and embracing the IB curriculum as the cornerstone of our academic excellence.
The IB program is accessible to any engaged and motivated student with an average of 75% and higher. Our students may choose the full Diploma, the IB Bilingual Diploma or up to four IB certificates, although it is important to understand that it is the full IB Diploma which provides the best preparation for university, as it is a comprehensive program with both depth and breadth.
IB Diploma candidates select from each of six subject groups and complete three additional requirements. Most IB subjects are two-year programs with examinations in May of the Grade 12 year. There are two challenge levels, Higher (HL) and Standard (SL) and students choose three subjects at each level. Those students who take two Language A subjects, typically English A1 and French A2, achieve the IB Bilingual Diploma. If a student chooses to take IB certificates in individual subjects instead of the full IB Diploma, any work done at the HL may also be recognized by universities for advanced course placement.
CAS Creativity Action Service
As part of its goal to educate the whole person and foster compassionate, responsible, globally aware citizens, the International Baccalaureate Diploma has the additional feature of a Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) component. This requires that each student participates in a minimum 150 hours over two years in creative or artistic projects, sports and community service activities. The hours are evenly distributed over the three areas and students monitor their own progress in a logbook, meeting regularly with the CAS Coordinator. The requirement is completed in the second term of the final year and includes a self evaluation essay.

Each year we encourage students who exhibit the following characteristics to apply to Ashbury College: proven academic achievement, demonstrated commitment and involvement in a variety of co-curricular activities, a positive attitude and the motivation to succeed, leadership potential and the desire to achieve their personal best.
Ashbury's Junior School for boys welcomes day students from Grades 4 to 8, with the main entry points at Grades 4 and 7. Our Senior School, for boys and girls, enrolls day and boarding students from Grades 9 to 12, with the main entry points being Grade 9 for day students and Grade 9, 10 and 11 for boarding students.
There will be two rounds of admission for Junor and Senior School for entry in September. Please review the important admissions dates carefully.
Please note:
- We will accept applications year round for non-entry grades. Should a place become available, the Admissions Committee will select qualified applicants and extend offers to those candidates who have completed the admissions process.
- A student transfer from boarding to day will require a student to re-apply as a day student, where they will be considered with all other applicants. The applicant pool for day students in grades 10, 11 and 12 is extremely competitive and openings are extremely rare as the day program fills in grade 9. Day students transferring to boarding can more easily be accommodated as our intake for boarding is in grade 10 and 11. The enrollment fee and application fee do not apply to transfer students within the school. A written request to change a current student’s day or boarding status must be sent to the Admissions Office by a parent or guardian.
Ashbury is noted for its outstanding athletics program that often receives local, national and even international recognition. All students at Ashbury College have the opportunity to engage in athletic activities and those who excel can further advance their skills through participation in the many interscholastic teams. On these teams students have the opportunity to compete with local school boards as well as other independent schools. Tournament play occurs in cities such as Toronto and Montreal and at national independent school events from Halifax to Victoria. In some years, school teams gain invaluable cultural and athletic experiences through international tours.
In the co-curricular athletic program students are provided with a quality learning experience that instills life-long values related to the benefits of health, sport, teamwork, cultural, physical and recreational activities. By encouraging daily physical activity in intramural and house competitions student participation at the school can be maximized.
The goal of the Ashbury interscholastic program is to create an enjoyable learning experience, while teaching the importance of striving for excellence, in an environment which stresses: fair play, sportsmanship, teamwork, diligence and leadership. One of the strengths of our program is its breadth of opportunities for the students to engage in. As members of the Canadian Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), the Ottawa Independent Schools Athletic Association (OISAA), the Ottawa-Carleton Catholic Intermediate Athletic Association (OCCIAA), the National Capital Secondary School Athletic Association (NCSSAA) and the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA), Ashbury College is able to provide interscholastic opportunities that span a large spectrum of student abilities.
Scheduling of athletic programs are subject to change as are interscholastic events that are based on student interest, practice availability, coaching and league/tournament scheduling.
Boarding is a unique experience that Ashbury College is proud and committed to offer to its students. One of our main goals in the boarding community is to promote Ashbury's core values in an authentic and meaningful way. The Ashbury boarding community is a caring, safe and structured environment.
