Welcome to University of the Ozarks on the Internet. We hope this electronic glimpse of our university gives you an idea of who we are and what we are about. In a nutshell, we are a private, liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). Nestled at the foot of the magnificent Ozark Mountains, we are located in Clarksville, Ark., about 100 miles west of Little Rock and 60 miles east of Fort Smith.   With our roots dating back to 1834, Ozarks is the oldest institution of higher education in the Arkansas/Oklahoma territory. We were also the first co-educational school west of the Mississippi River, the first college in Arkansas to graduate a woman (1872), the first historically white college to admit an African-American (1957) and the first institution of higher education to provide support to students with learning disabilities (the Jones Learning Center). In keeping with the legacy of our rich history, we feel our current educational environment is second to none. Our picturesque 30-acre campus combines grand traditions with beautiful facilities and state-of-the-art technology. Opportunities to balance your studies with healthy recreation abound on and off campus. And, there is no shortage of friends with whom you can enjoy schoolwork and campus life. By the end of your first year, it is quite likely you will know every student on campus and you will develop many friendships that last your lifetime.
