The University of Alabama began in 1831 as the state's first public college. Now nicknamed "The Capstone" - when in 1913, former UA president G.H. Denny referred to it as the "capstone of the public school system of the state" - the Alabama college has become a student-centered research university that is dedicated to the scholastic excellence of its student body.
When it comes to enrolling National Merit, National Hispanic, and National Achievement Scholars, the University of Alabama is one of the top schools in the nation. In 2005, the university ranked 13th among other public universities in the nation in its enrollment of National Merit Scholars.
With more than 250 student organizations to help students in developing leadership skills, values, and character, as well as a Community Service Center that to aid them in serving others, the University of Alabama cares deeply about community both on- and off-campus. |
