The mission of Lehman College is to offer its students a liberal arts education and preparation for careers and advanced study. The College, committed to meeting the education needs of its urban population, affirms its objectives to: Provide access to a common body of knowledge and opportunities to develop a lifelong love of learning; promote excellence in scholarship, teaching, research and artistic endeavors; develop the ability to think analytically and creatively; broaden educational opportunities through joint programs with other institutions locally, nationally, and internationally; promote an understanding of and respect for such differences as gender, age, ethnicity, culture, religion, sexual orientation, and physical ability; advance the understanding and use of emerging technologies; and serve as a center for the continuing educational and cultural needs for the region through access to the college's facilities and expertise in the academic disciplines, professional fields and the fine and performing arts.

  • Founded in 1931 as the Bronx campus of Hunter College. Established in 1968 as an independent college of The City University of New York and named for Herbert H. Lehman, the great New York Governor, U.S. Senator, philanthropist, and humanitarian.
  • Lehman is a public, comprehensive, coeducational liberal arts college with more than 90 undergraduate and graduate degree programs and specializations.
  • Enrollment: 9074 including 7228 undergraduate students and 1846 graduate students of whom 73 percent are female and 27 percent are male (Fall 1999). Students come from more than 90 countries around the world.
  • Lehman's on a 37-acre tree-lined campus noted for its distinctive blend of Collegiate Gothic and modern architecture; 15 buildings include a Center for the Performing Arts, Art Gallery, and APEX, a world-class facility for sports and recreation.
  • Lehman is located along the Jerome Park Reservoir in the Bedford Park-Kingsbridge neighborhoods in the northwest Bronx. Near public transportation (No. 4 and D trains) and Bronx buses. Ample on-campus parking in secured lots.
  • There are 310 full-time faculty members of whom 85 percent hold PhD degrees.
  • With an average class size of 21 students, the student to faculty ratio is 15:1.
