The University of Maine is located in Orono and is part of the University of Maine College System. The other colleges in the system are: University of Maine at Augusta, University of Maine Farmington, University of Maine Machias, University of Maine Ft. Kent, University of Maine at Presque Isle, the University of Southern Maine and Maine Law School. The University of Maine system was established in 1968 with the goal of providing accessible and affordable learning opportunities, as well as to improve the quality of life in Maine. In addition to the universities and outreach centers, the University of Maine system has 75 local ITV sites for distance learners. The University of Maine is located on the banks of the Stillwater River. Founded in 1862 as the Maine College of Agriculture, under the provisions of the Morrill Act, the University of Maine finally opened in 1868.

The University of Maine awards degrees in 88 Bachelor's degree programs; 64 Master's Degree programs and 25 doctorate degree programs. Over 12,000 students enroll at the University of Maine each semester. There are six departments of study at the University of Maine: Business, Public Policy and Health; Education and Human Development; Engineering; Liberal Arts and Sciences; Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture; and the Graduate School.

Students wishing to experience the world by studying in a foreign country can do so through one of the many study abroad programs offered through the University of Maine. Undergraduate may apply to go their sophomore, junior or first semester of their senior year and most programs require a GPA of at least 2.75. Semester, year-long and summer programs are available to countries such as: Australia, Bulgaria, Chile, England, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Spain, Turkey and Wales.

The Fogler Library on campus has come a long way since it was housed in one room at its inception in 1868. Today, the library is ranked one of the best college libraries in the state. In 1963, the library became a regional depository for government documents. Today, the library has over 1 million printed volumes of books; over 1.5 million microfilms; over 2.25 million federal; state and Canadian federal and provincial government documents and many special collections in all forms.

Quick Facts:

  • The University of Maine Black Bears intercollegiate sports teams include: baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, ice hockey, swim and dive, soccer, field hockey, track and field, softball and volleyball.

  • First year students are expected to live on campus.

  • There are many opportunities for students to become involved in organizations, clubs and other activities. There are also cultural opportunities at the Hudson Museum, Maine Center for the Arts, Museum of Art, Page Farm Home Museum and the Planetarium.
