University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is one of three public colleges in the University of Illinois system. The other two colleges in the system are the University of Illinois Springfield and the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2008, the University of Chicago also opened a global campus for distance learners. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign bills itself as the flagship college in the system, known as a first-rate research college. The history of the college dates back to 1867 when the school was established as the Illinois Industrial University. It was one of the 37 land-grant institutions. Located in east central Illinois, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is in the twin cities, on more than 1,400 acres about 140 miles south of Chicago, 125 miles west of Indianapolis and 180 miles northeast of St. Louis.
Over 30,000 students attend the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The college offers over 4,000 courses to support 150 undergraduate majors. There are 16 schools within the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign: College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences; Institute of Aviation, College of Business, College of Communication, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Fine and Applied Arts, Graduate College, Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations, College of Law, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, College of Medicine at Urbana-Champaign, School of Social Work and College of Veterinary Medicine.
Students may choose to live on campus in 22 undergraduate residence halls that can accommodate over 8,500 students. Students will have easy access to the 286 campus buildings including the 4,000-seat Kannert Center for the Performing Arts, the 1,750 seat Foellinger Auditorium, the 17,200-seat Assembly Hall and the Japan House and Arboretum. There are also four cultural centers on campus: Afro-American, Asian-American, La Casa Cultural Latina and Native American. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is also home to one of the largest public library collections in the world. There are 37 campus libraries housing more than 10 million volumes.
