Pacific School of Massage was established more than three decades ago by a husband-and-wife team, Cheryl and Fred Mitouer. The Mitouers were committed to the idea of spreading knowledge of the healing art of massage, and courses at Pacific School of Massage provide students with the tools they need to begin careers as professional massage therapists. In addition to massage, students at Pacific School of Massage also study nutrition, anatomy, physiology and counseling. The program of study encourages participants to develop the skills they need to communicate effectively with clients and take responsibility for their own well being and health. Pacific School of Massage also offers training seminars and specialized workshops for advanced practitioners throughout the year.

Classes at Pacific School of Massage consist of two, six-day sessions that take place at the school's campus on the northern California coast. The two sessions take place one month apart, and in the intervening weeks students engage in independent study and hands-on practice. Pacific School of Massage has a beautiful natural campus setting that creates a retreat environment, and participants in the program are encouraged to develop friendships and mutual support relationships with other students. To ensure individualized attention from instructors, class sizes at Pacific School of Massage are limited to no more than a dozen students. Tai chi, yoga and low-impact aerobics are also incorporated into the curriculum at Pacific School of Massage, helping to promote health and wellness among students.

At the end of session one, students will be able to give full-body massages that combines elements of lymphatic massage, shiatsu, chakra balancing, Swedish massage, Oriental massage and deep bodywork. During the month-long independent study that follows the initial training, students complete assigned research and reading assignments and keep a journal documenting the massages they give. Their work during this period is submitted and evaluated prior to the second session. The second session explores transformation bodywork, acupressure modalities, and physioemotional release therapies, along with lessons in anatomy and physiology. After completing the second session, students complete a take-home exam. Students who pass the exam are awarded a diploma from Pacific School of Massage.
