Cleveland Community College was established in 1965 by and for the people of Cleveland County. It is a comprehensive, public two-year college and member institution of the North Carolina Community College System. The College's mission is threefold. Its first mission is to help students achieve professional and personal goals by providing quality, accessible educational programs and services. Second, is to serve as an agent for economic development by responding to the educational and training needs of business and industry. The third mission of Cleveland Community College is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life in Cleveland County by actively participating in collaborative community initiatives.

Cleveland Community College has several programs of study available for students. Certificate programs include those in Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, Heating, Industrial Safety, Infant and Toddler Care, Machining Technology, and Medical Office Maintenance, just to name a few. Also available are college transfer programs such as Pre-College Transfer Nursing, Pre-Elementary Education for middle or grade school and special education, Pre-Biology and Pre-English. Cleveland Community College also offers various diploma and technical programs as well as general education, that may fall under headings such as accounting, criminal justice technology, early childhood education, and electrical technology.

• Through placement testing, Cleveland Community College students are advised to take classes according to their level.
