Cape Breton University bases its education model on personalization and community development. Located in Sydney, on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, the campus is part of the surrounding community and works towards helping Cape Breton flourish. Though the university has a growing national and international focus, it strives toward community development, and has implemented training and discovery models to shape the economic progress of its region and people.
The dynamic student body is made up of more than 3,000 full-time and part-time students from the local area, other areas of Canada and more than 35 other countries. Students have access to outstanding applied research opportunities, along with technical assistance in business, industry and community organizations. Most of the degree programs include a transition-to-work component, utilizing co-op education, work placements, internships and work-study programs.
At CBU small class sizes are a priority to give students access to the institution's acclaimed faculty, several of whom have been granted Research Chairs. Students have the opportunity to pursue both academic and scientific research in Cape Breton's advanced facilities. For the liberal arts focused students, Cape Breton home to the Boardmore Playhouse, a fully equipped theatre, an Art Gallery which houses an impressive collection of national and international artwork, Beaton Institute a leading source of historical and genealogical research in the area.
