Established in 1855, Berea College was founded at the first interracial and co-educational institute of higher learning in the South. The liberal arts college aims to educate those who do not have a surfeit of economic resources. Students who attend Berea College are academically promising and a majority of them come from Appalachia.
Berea College is located within Berea, Ky., which is known as the arts-and-crafts capital of Kentucky. The campus is located approximately 30 miles south of Lexington, close to the center of town.
Education at Berea College is first-class and incorporates Christian beliefs and characteristics into each discipline. At Berea College undergraduate students can choose between bachelor's degrees in up to 28 fields of study, which include the arts, sciences, professional programs and programs designed by students. With 14 teacher education programs to choose from, students at Berea College are trained by some of the brightest professors to continue their legacy through the field of education and teaching. As Berea College is home to developing, promising intellectuals, it's not a surprise that the Kentucky college offers its students roughly 20 departmental and national academic honor societies.
Learning only begins in the classroom at Berea College as it continues through work programs and campus involvement. Each student who attends Berea College is involved in the labor program, which allows students to work 10 to 15 hours per week to earn a portion of their tuition costs. The program teaches students the value of work and gives them hands-on experience to take with them into the workforce after commencement. Campus engagement continues through Berea College's more than 70 special interest organizations and clubs, a convocation series and the Campus Christian Center.
