Originally established as Benedict Institute in 1870, Benedict College was founded primarily for those who were of African descent and had been recently emancipated. The first class at Benedict Institute totaled 10 students and one teacher. But, as time has passed, the educational facility has grown in both number and credibility. Today, the institution, known as Benedict College, rests on an 80-acre plantation in Columbia, S.C. and is flourishing as a private, African American institution. And while Benedict College is one of the largest private, undergraduate colleges in South Carolina, it is acknowledged for its small class sizes and student-to-teacher ratio.
Within six schools of learning, including an honors college, are some 12 departments that offer roughly 30 majors. Students who attend Benedict College are able to take advantage of a close-knit community where professors know their students by first name and are always happy to help a student progress in his/her chosen field. Technologies such as Blackboard-an interactive, online program that allows students to receive course materials, connect with professors and classmates and receive updates regarding classes students are enrolled in-are also in place for students to reach their highest potential. With an attentive faculty, advanced technologies and a number of programs of study to choose from, students at Benedict College are continually intrigued and engaged.
