Founded in 1889, Barnard College is a private, independent, liberal arts college for women affiliated with Columbia University. Accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, this New York women's college combines a residential women's college with the resources of a major research university.

Students at Barnard College can earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in about 50 fields in the humanities, social sciences, arts, natural sciences, and interdisciplinary areas. Barnard College also offers a variety of five-year programs in cooperation with Columbia University, including public affairs, public policy, and engineering. Students at Barnard College may also be qualified to enter Columbia University after three years of pre-professional study in law or dental surgery. In addition, study abroad options are available in England, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan.

Barnard College students can compete in NCAA Division I through a consortium with Columbia University. Fifteen teams are offered including basketball, crew, lacrosse, and volleyball. Students can also participate in more than 80 organizations on campus, including performance groups, language clubs, community service, and student publications.
