Ball State University started as a modest teacher training school in 1899. The campus is situated on 660 acres, 100 miles north of Indianapolis in Muncie, Indiana, with an additional 300 acres of property used for research purposes. BSU's 69 buildings are worth more than $1 billion.

Over the years, Ball State University has experienced tremendous growth and now offers more than 165 undergraduate majors and pre-professional programs in seven academic colleges: Applied Sciences and Technology; Architecture and Planning; Miller College of Business; Communication, Information and Media; Fine Arts; Sciences and Humanities; and the Teachers College. For post-grads and working professionals, BSU offers more than 100 master's and doctoral degrees. Intensive research, internships and capstone projects are integral parts of the undergraduate curriculum.

The Bracken Library's collection boasts more than 1.1 million titles, 1.1 million microforms and more than 3,200 periodical subscriptions. It also houses more than 456,000 audiovisuals and more than 548,000 e-journals, government documents and digital databases.

Ball State University has seven men's and 12 women's sports teams that compete for NCAA Division I titles. Eighteen athletic programs are part of the Mid-American Conference (MAC), while the men's volleyball team is a part of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA).
