Athens State University is a public, coeducational, two-year college offering baccalaureate programs to junior and senior students. Students must complete 64 credits or earned an associate's degree prior to enrollment. Founded in 1822, ASU is the oldest institution of higher education in the Alabama College System. Its academic program is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and aims to promote critical thinking, communication, and ethical behavior.

Students at Athens State University can choose from more than 30 degree programs through the College of Business, College of Education, or the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to its campus courses, Athens State University offers online degree programs in accounting, management, computer science, and religious studies.

To facilitate learning, Athens State University offers flexible scheduling and cooperative arrangements with other institutions. In addition, students can participate in a variety of campus organizations including honor societies, social clubs, religious groups, and student government.
