The only comprehensive public university in the region, Arkansas State University Jonesboro was founded in 1909 by the Arkansas Legislature as a community agricultural school. After several name changes and expanded academic programs, ASU Jonesboro reached university status in 1967. Today ASU Jonesboro offers a full range of degree programs--associate, bachelor's, master's, specialist and doctoral--covering well over 100 fields.

There are about 8,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in classes at Arkansas State University Jonesboro. The most popular undergraduate degree programs are nursing, early childhood education, biological sciences, psychology, radiological sciences, business management and engineering. Graduate students flock to the M.B.A. (Business Administration), M.S.N. (Nursing), M.S.E. (Educational Leadership) and M.S.N. (Nurse Anesthesia) degree programs.

ASU Jonesboro students have the option of living in single-gender and co-ed residence halls on campus. University Hall and Arkansas Hall accommodate 300 female students each, while the 11-story Kays Hall high rise is co-ed by wing and houses 470 students. The Collegiate Park Apartments house more than 300 upperclassmen. Non-traditional aged students, graduate students and families can reside on campus at Indian Village Apartments. A new 50,000-square-foot residence hall for honors students is under construction. The living-learning residential community will feature suite-style living, more than 200 beds and a state-of-the-art classroom.

Arkansas State University Jonesboro varsity sports teams compete in NCAA Division I Sun Belt Conference, except for the football program, which participates in NCAA Division IA. The athletic programs include baseball, cross country, football, golf, indoor and track, basketball, bowling, soccer, tennis and volleyball.
