The Arcata School of Massage
145 G Street, Suite E
California's Arcata School of Massage offers complete programs for massage training and NCBTMB approved Continuing Education. The goal of ASM is to develop "sensitive, balanced and confident practitioners of massage and bodywork". The main program is a 700-hour Certified Massage Training Program that includes somatic body work and prep for the national exam. The curriculum is balanced between the clinical and intuitive to provide practical training in both the art and science of bodywork. Earning a certificate from ASM makes a student eligible to take the National Certification Exam, required or accepted for massage licensure or certification in all but six states that have laws regulating massage. Arcata School of Massage is a California BPPVE Approved Vocational School.
Classes are small and offered both daytime and evening. All instructors have worked as therapists, teaching from experience as career professionals. The program's coursework includes Swedish Massage, Somatic Bodywork, Deep Tissue, Asian Bodywork, Therapeutic Treatments, Healing Chi Kung, Hot Stone Massage, and Business. To prepare for the National Certification Exam, ASM offers courses in Applied Anatomy, Pathology, and Body Systems. For real-world experience, the school includes an in-house clinic internship in the program. Graduates of ASM can work at spas, with chiropractors and physical therapists, in holistic clinics, and in private practice.
Courses last eleven months and students must commit to five hours a day, five days a week. Course are divided into three aspects; somatic bodywork, massage labs, and student internship. In Somatic Bodywork, students learn about working with the nervous system, emotions, energy, and a detailed understanding of Anatomy and function. In the optional Massage Lab, students work on practicing massage in a supervised, unguided format. The Student Internship offers a real world experience for students to literally become therapists and full-time instructors by completing a 95-hour internship in a full-service massage.
Continuing Education classes include Massage Basics, Hot Stone Therapy , Body Treatments with Ayurvedic Massage, and Marma & Vishesh Ayurvedic Deep Tissue Massage and are offered for current massage therapists to learn new techniques.
