The American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service conducts its associate degree program both on its New York City campus and over the Internet. AAMI educates a broad and diverse array of students to provide an important service for families who are putting a loved one to rest. The online degree program started in January of 2006, and though almost all of the program can be completed over the Internet, the American Board of Funeral Service Education mandates that all AAMI students complete their restorative art lab and clinical embalming courses on the New York City campus. All AAMI students must also be in New York City to take the comprehensive review in preparation for the National Board Exam.

The American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service's associate degree program requires three to four semesters of study, with classes categorized into five areas of instruction. These are business management, public health and technical, social sciences, general education, and legal, ethical and regulatory law. Business management courses at the New York institute include titles such as principles of mathematics and funeral home directing. Public health and technical courses include several levels of principles of embalming and microbiology for embalmers. The social sciences area covers courses such as death, human development and sociology of funeral service. Courses under the legal, regulatory and ethical banner include business law, mortuary law, and professional ethics. Courses that fall within the general education category include communication skills and introduction to science.

Once students have completed all other graduation requirements, they must sit for the National Board Exam, which is given by the International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards. Upon passing this exam, students are awarded both their AAMI associate degree and a certificate of proficiency. Licensed funeral directors compose, in large part, the New York institute's faculty. The on-campus and online programs share the same faculty members.
