Alvernia College, founded in 1958 by the Bernardine Sisters of the Order of Saint Francis of Assisi, is a four-year Catholic comprehensive professional college with a liberal arts core. The 55-acre main Alvernia campus is in Reading, next to Angelica Lake. Other sites can be found in Philadelphia and in eastern Pennsylvania. Both residential undergraduates and working professionals pursue coursework in 40 majors and 21 minors leading to degrees that include Associate, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, five Masters degrees and a recently added PhD program in leadership.

Student enrollment consists of over 2,750 students, and there are 77 full-time faculty members. Graduate students can take courses towards Master of Business Administration, Master of Education, Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, Master of Arts in Community Counseling or Master of Science in Occupational Therapy. Undergraduate students are given the opportunity to take six credits toward graduate study during their senior year, which allows them to complete their graduate degree within one year after graduation.

Alvernia College's full-time undergraduate students also have the opportunity to cross register for one course each regular semester at partnering colleges, which include the Albright College, Kutztown University, Penn State Berks-Lehigh Valley College and Reading Area Community College.
