Students Use Facebook to Support Everything from Silly to Serious
March 15th, 2010
Are you on Facebook? Silly question. An overwhelming majority of high school students have their own Facebook page. You most likely log on to keep in touch with friends and family, but do you know that Facebook has the power to go far beyond a simple status update or a Super Poke?
You may have heard about the Betty White Facebook campaign to get the ivory-haired actress a host spot “Saturday Night Live.” While this senior superstar never truly faded out of the spotlight, she has enjoyed a recent resurgence that has seen her in, among other things, this very memorable Super Bowl commercial.
The former Golden Girl has enjoyed a renewed fan base, and the Facebook page worked: Betty White is slated to appear on SNL on May 8.
Now, getting the attention of “SNL” producer Lorne Michaels isn’t as important as, say, saving the environment or fighting against tuition increases, but it does prove just how big Facebook’s audience is and the fact that social media is a force to be reckoned with.
Check out some of these school-related fan and group pages with a staggering number of fans and members on Facebook:
California Students for More College Aid
NYC H.S. Students Support Haiti

Is there a cause or charity that interests you? Set up a Facebook page and see who else is out there. That’s exactly what Hannah Parker of Burlington Community HS in Burlington, Iowa. Her Facebook group–Please join!-1 million strong against puppy mills—now has more than 16,000 fans. Nice work, Hannah!
